Gold was once found in this mountain valley that embraces Harrietville; today there's the golden, russet and burgundy tones of rustling autumn leaves. The Autumn Leaf Cottages are aptly named, but guests will find them delightful in any season, cooler in the mountain air of summer, cosy in often snow-flecked winter.
These are high-roofed cottages of timeless design, surrounded by park-like gardens with views of the mountains, and stylishly furnished in warm, modern colours. Their north-eastern aspect ensures they are sunny and bright, and the reverse-cycle air-conditioning provides a comfortable temperature at all times. The owners are on hand to welcome guests and to make sure they have all they need, but do not obtrude otherwise.
The local trout and berry farms are well worth visiting, and there's an attractive cafe
nearby. Bright is notable for its highly acclaimed restaurants showcasing the fine wines and produce of the alpine valleys, and is just a short drive away. Further east, the Great Alpine Road leads to Victoria's top snowfields, ski resorts and bush-walking trails. Location: 340km or 4¼ hours northeast of Melbourne. . Melway 922 G10. HEMA RA 49 F9.
Facilities: Two adjoining cottages, each with two bedrooms (queen bed, single bunks), kitchen, dining/lounge (TV, DVD, VCR), RC AC, verandah (BBQ). Laundry facilities. Self-catering; continental breakfast available by prior arrangement.
