The thriving riverside city of Mildura attracts holiday-makers from all over Australia, not least because of its sunny weather and numerous gourmet attractions. Few probably realise the town's deep heritage, but it's a history that is amply demonstrated in this delightful 1920s cottage, which makes an enticingly different Mildura option.
Ruth Penny has put her heart, soul and a good proportion of the furniture and knick-knacks from her antique shop Sweet Lily into her eponymous cottage. The result is totally alluring: from the garden behind its cute white picket fence and the sunny, timber verandah to the neat little lounge room which, quite frankly, won't get as much use as it ought to thanks to the great Mildura weather.
The combined kitchen and dining area have an uncluttered country feel (we recommend taking the supplied-breakfast option there), and the two bedrooms are airy, cosy and comfortable. Penny's Cottage is a short walk from Mildura's main shopping strip (including the award-winning Stefano's restaurant). A little farther afield, the region's wineries, river activities and national parks beckon. Location: 545km or 6.5 hours northwest of Melbourne. Melway 914 B5. HEMA RA 46 A5.
Facilities: One house: two bedrooms (queen, two singles), lounge (TV, VCR, CD), kitchen/dining, bathroom, AC, heating, laundry facilities. Self catering or full breakfast provisions provided. Visit this property's website
