There's a delicious combination of open spaces, ocean views and spacious accommodation at Waverley House Cottages. The location is peaceful and private, sitting high on a hill overlooking Lakes Entrance, among eight acres of flourishing native gardens and scatterings of grey box eucalypts. It is close to the lakes and sea, yet separate from holiday crowds – and all the better for it.
The one-bedroom Salmon Company or Fishpen cottages are perfect for couples, or there are two-bedroom cottages for families or couples travelling together. Our favourite is Bass Cottage, with its views of (you guessed it!) Bass Strait. Whichever you choose, there's a delightful mix of country touches such as wood stoves, plus all the mod-cons including spas.
The communal gazebo is more like a clubhouse thanks to its enclosed hot spa, open fire and large TV. And golfing fans won't have to go far – the Lake View golf course is next door. Location: 320km or four hours east of Melbourne. Melway 929 C5. HEMA RA 50 E7.
Facilities: Two one-bedroom and four two bedroom cottages (one king, one queen bedroom) each with kitchen/dining/living (TV, DVD, CD, VCR), RC AC, spa bathroom, verandah, covered parking. Continental breakfast provisions provided first morning (full breakfast provisions available); seafood platters by arrangement.
