There's a delicious combination of open spaces, ocean views and spacious accommodation at Waverley House Cottages. The location is peaceful and private, sitting high on a hill overlooking Lakes Entrance, among eight acres of flourishing native gardens and scatterings of grey box eucalypts. It is close to the lakes and sea, yet separate from holiday crowds – and all the better for it.
The one-bedroom Salmon Company or Fishpen cottages are perfect for couples, or there are two-bedroom cottages for families or couples travelling together. Our favourite is Bass Cottage, with its views of (you guessed it!) Bass Strait. Whichever you choose, there's a delightful mix of country touches such as wood stoves, plus all the mod-cons including spas.
 The communal gazebo is more like a clubhouse thanks to its enclosed hot spa, open fire and large TV. And golfing fans won't have to go far – the Lake View golf course is next door.
Location: 320km or four hours east of Melbourne. Melway 929 C5. HEMA RA 50 E7.
Facilities: Two one-bedroom and four two bedroom cottages (one king, one queen bedroom) each with kitchen/dining/living (TV, DVD, CD, VCR), RC AC, spa bathroom, verandah, covered parking. Three with open fires. Solar heated swimming pool, BBQs, enclosed hot spa. Continental breakfast provisions provided first morning (full breakfast provisions available); seafood platters by arrangement.
