Few people probably realise the history pervading Sunbury, and not just that of rock festivals in the early 1970s. In fact, Rupertswood is the birthplace of the Ashes, where a set of bails was burned in 1882 to signify the death of English cricket – a process we now know has been ongoing. It's also the site of arguably one of Australia's finest Victorian mansions, which now offers exclusive accommodation and a chance for guests to experience life in a true 19th century architectural masterpiece.
Rupertswood's ornate exterior with its prominent tower is impressive, but then so are all the rooms laden with antique furniture and topped by lofty ceilings. There are 11 beautiful guest rooms to choose from, including one in which King George V slept.
It isn't difficult to imagine the formal parties, balls and cricket matches that were held here and today guests are equally welcome to walk the grounds, learn the history, take a light lunch on the verandah or dinner in the grand dining room. And if you need to venture out, Rupertswood is close to Melbourne, the Macedon Ranges, Hanging Rock and even Daylesford. Location: 15 minutes from Melbourne Tullamarine Airport; 40km or 30 minutes northwest of Melbourne. Melway 382 G2. HEMA RA 45 E13.
Facilities: 11 ensuite rooms; dining room, lounge, library and breakfast room. Conference facilities. Full breakfast served, dinner by arrangement.
