It is possible that even those not much into wine will greatly enjoy staying at Hanging Rock Winery's purpose-built retreat. After all, the country style, four-bedroom property sits on its own grassy hill, backs onto bushland, has a huge amount of space and comfort, and is only a few minutes' drive from Woodend or The Rock itself. But for vinophiles the chance of staying in the middle of a working vineyard, and probably Macedon's best-known winery at that, is simply heaven on a stick.
Arrive at the right time and harvest will be in full swing, while the rest of the year there are all the other vineyard activities wine maker John Ellis and his crew engage in to make sure the cellar door tastings never stop flowing.
 The retreat features shady verandahs in a modern interpretation of a country house and makes a terrific getaway for a group of up to eight. Or, couples can relax in one of the beautifully appointed king-size bedrooms with their own private balconies, make use of the spacious lounge with its vaulted ceiling and admire the views towards the ornamental lake and vines.
