The Farmers Arms started life more than 140 years ago as an inn and watering hole offering accommodation and refreshment to diggers on their way to the Goldfields. Now it is an utterly gorgeous retreat, not far from Melbourne, that retains many historic features from the 1860s but with 21st century luxury and comfort.
Behind the wide, street-front verandah are polished Baltic pine floors lit by dramatic floor lights, pressed metal walls and ceilings (the dining room is stunning) and well-chosen antiques, which create an atmosphere of refined elegance and warmth. There are various spots for rest and relaxation, including the beautiful garden with its roses, 100-year-old elms and rivulets linking the several calming ponds.
Host Diane Leorke is a great cook and provides Friday night platters by request (there is also a thoughtful range of local and Australian wines and French Champagne). Breakfast – with locally sourced organic eggs, bacon and breads – is a treat. Golf, bike riding, wineries and the nearby spa country round out the perfect stay. Location: 70km or one hour northwest of Melbourne. Melway 909 J8. HEMA RA 45 D13.
Facilities: Five rooms: three with ensuite (two with spa), two with private bathrooms. Sunroom/atrium (each with log fire), dining room, reading rooms, cellar. Private guest entrance, off-street parking. Group dinners by prior arrangement; full breakfast served.
