It's only a short hop from the centre of Melbourne to Campaspe Country House in leafy Woodend, but what a revelation. The gracious 1920s residence presides over the lawns, hedges and deciduous trees of an Edna Walling garden. The fabulous dining, hearty welcome and long list of activities soon put any city hassles into a far-distant perspective. There is a choice of rooms, including two in the main house, the garden ensuite rooms or a two-bedroom cottage for those who need the space. All are equipped with comforts including crisp linen sheets and modern necessities such as wi-fi internet.
The restaurant under chef Ryan Crossley's direction is outstanding (it is recommended by The Age Good Food Guide), and the à la carte breakfasts are an extravagant morning feast.
But what to do all day' There are the Macedon and Hanging Rock wineries and the  district is dotted with antique shops, markets and galleries. The Campaspe even has a pair of Vespa scooters for touring. Or you could stay in and enjoy the pool, a hit of tennis or a round of croquet or petanque.
