Qdos is a visionary concept by artist Graeme Wilkie to bring the arts – visual, performing and literary – from the distractions of the city into the tranquillity of the Otway Ranges. He began in 1998 with a contemporary-style gallery and restaurant built of bluestone and timber amid a sculpture park under tall gum trees. Since then he has added widely spaced 'tree houses‘ for couples who want to feel in harmony with each other and the beauty of nature.
Each of the five houses balances the simplicity and aesthetics of Japanese-inspired interior design against a backdrop of bushland, where guests may spot the occasional koala and listen to kookaburras laughing in the treetops. Glass doors fold open to private balconies, and sliding shoji screens divide the well-appointed living and sleeping quarters.
Breakfast is served in the restaurant: nutty muesli with yoghurt and honey, Irrewarra sourdough bread or fruit loaf, blueberry or banana pecan pancakes – and that's just for starters. Lorne, with its restaurants, shops and beach, is just a kilometre down the hill, but from the tranquillity of your tree house it could be a thousand miles away.
Location: 140km or two hours southwest of Melbourne. Melway 518 E9. HEMA RA 45 J11.
Facilities: Five one-bedroom tree houses, each with living and sleeping area (queen latex bed), ensuite, private deck. Full breakfast served. Visit this property's website
