For all its splendour, the Royal Mail has lost none of its pub-like charm. You can choose between various architect-designed rooms, two-storey apartments or even the four-bedroom Mulberry House – and then have a drink on the verandah, join locals at the bar or relax by the pool. For a different theme, the nearby bluestone Mount Sturgeon Cottages combine rural charm with unexpected urban-chic facilities.
 There are nearby walking trails, especially around Mount Sturgeon, which guards the hotel. The Age Good Food Guide-recommended restaurant is worth the trip alone, featuring Bangladeshi cuisine on Monday nights – another delightfully different feature of this beguiling and progressive hotel.
