Gracious living in secluded bushland' That's no contradiction on The Grelco Run, a 1000-acre property of lightly timbered country on the north-western edge of the Grampians – the largest privately owned native forest in western Victoria. In spring it is carpeted with wildflowers, in all seasons it abounds with wildlife, and in the distance, the colours of the mountains change from bluish to ochre as the sun sets.
In the midst of this natural wonderland, retired architect Graeme McDonald has built a delightful homestead that includes a guest wing of three bedroom suites and a separate sitting room, dining room and library – all with panoramic windows. There are also two well-equipped, self-contained cottages among the trees.
All guests may, by arrangement, share Liz McDonald's delicious dinners, preceded by
drinks and canapés. In another corner of the property, son Cameron runs the esteemed Grampians Horse Riding Centre. Book in advance for an escorted riding tour of this beautifully unspoilt environment. Location: 40km northwest of Halls Gap. 300km or 3.5 hours west of Melbourne. Melway 926 C11. HEMA RA 44 C5.
Facilities: Homestead: three ensuite bedrooms; lounge, dining, sitting room; full breakfast served. Two self-contained cottages, each sleeping up to six with spacious lounge (log fire). Breakfast provisions provided, dinner by arrangement ($66 per person). Visit this property's website
