When one thinks of Victoria’s grand Western District homesteads, Allanvale Homestead comes to mind, not only as a shining example but one of the few that welcomes guests to share in its grandeur. Built on the wealth from sheep, Allanvale today offers warm hospitality to individual guests as well as groups.
Designed by renowned Arts and Crafts architect Harold Desbrowe-Annear, Allanvale and its stunning ballroom lounge are simply magical (ask to see the orchestra room). Accommodation is in a separate wing of the homestead and features beautifully decorated rooms, a charming bathroom and a country kitchen, which affords self-catering flexibility unusual in an historic home. From here, you can easily explore the Grampians – Great Western’s vineyards are up the road – or relax on the property and swim in the pool or play tennis.
Allanvale is highly sought-after in the wedding season for garden nuptials, where white roses, sweeping lawns and the curvaceous lines of the homestead make a dream-like setting. Also on the property are the restored and delightfully rustic Shearer’s Quarters (see review opposite).
Location: 215km or 2˝ hours west of Melbourne. Melway X920 F11.
Facilities: One self-contained homestead wing: three bedrooms, two bathrooms, sitting room (open fire), kitchen, fourth bedroom available. Swimming pool, tennis court (by arrangement). Self-catering (breakfast available). Visit this property's website
