Since we last visited this elegant homestead set on a sheep grazing property near Great Western, owner Annie Kilpatrick has added an extra room to the guest wing. It's a lovely surprise too: the cosy orchestra chamber overlooking Allanvale's ballroom has been transformed into a charming bedroom, complete with shutters enclosing what amounts to a private balcony in the house.
That takes Allanvale's bedroom count to four in the self-contained guest wing. There is an exquisite country style here, with beautiful period touches to the fittings and furnishings. The gracious gardens, with their ancient shade trees (and tennis court and pool), are best viewed over tea on the wide verandah while you browse a book or gossip the quiet hours away.
 It is just a short hop down the road to the Great Western wineries and not much further to the Grampians, making Allanvale a lovely base for touring the region. Allanvale has also developed a reputation for its wedding parties in the ballroom, with plenty of room for guests in the nearby shearers' quarters.
