All Victoria breathed a huge sigh of relief when Walhalla was spared during the bushfires that raged in the area early in 2007. After all, the town's secluded, heavily forested location in the foothills of Mount Baw Baw is one of the old gold-mining town's major attractions. Historic icons such as the Star Hotel are a reminder of just how lucky we are to have such a rich heritage.
The Star has already been rebuilt once, after a fire in 1951. Now it is a wonderful blend of colonial influences such as the wide verandah clad in iron lacework, the clever use of corrugated iron for interior touches, and the country-style lounge and bar where guests can relax in front of a log fire after a day's bushwalking, skiing, fishing or sightseeing. Despite the delightful rusticity, the rooms are spacious, contemporary and equipped with all the mod cons.
 The hotel's Grey Horse Cafe is a casual place for lunch or real coffee, bringing a touch of St Kilda to rural Victoria, and Parker's restaurant has a full menu of hearty meals to top off a big day in the great outdoors.
