You might think they don't build impressive manor houses anymore, but luckily for us they do and one result is Montfort Manor. Everything about this house, built of Mount Gambier limestone on 7.5 acres of landscaped gardens with an ornamental lake, is huge. That includes the five-square bridal suite and the Gone with the Wind staircase of native jarrah.
Each suite is furnished with antiques and decorated to a theme: Windsor features a handcrafted king-size bed and two-metre mirror; Napoleon boasts a restored 1830s French bed with wood inlays and brass ormolu trimmings; and the Marble suite has a unique design and stunning marble bathroom.
French doors open from the spacious lounge, where guests may relax by the fireside, to a paved terrace, garden pavilion and swimming pool (complete with 25-metre heated
lap lane). There's also an inviting sunroom and a library. For special occasions, book a package to include bubbly on ice, a cheese and fruit platter, quality chocolates and fresh flowers. Location: 160km or two hours east of Melbourne. Melway 928 D7. HEMA RA 50 F2.
Facilities: Four suites (three king, one queen) each with private entrance, plasma TV, DVD, wireless broadband, ensuite (two with spa), kitchenette, central heating, RC AC. Guest lounge (open fire), library, sunroom, breakfast room; laundry and BBQ facilities. Pool. Tennis court planned. Conference/wedding facilities.
