For garden lovers or simply lovers of beautiful things, a sojourn at Janalli is sure to be an absolute delight and inspiration.
Phillipa and Alan Beeson have created 10 acres of gorgeous gardens on the shores of Lake Tarago in Gippsland's gourmet country. The grounds are full of diverse surprises, including an English wood and rose arbour, formal Italian and Mediterranean gardens, a Japanese garden overlooking one of two ornamental lakes stocked with trout, and a section of Australian native and bush food plants, all shared by a variety of native birds. Quite simply, it would have to be one of the most incredible gardens we have ever featured in our guidebooks.
The beautifully renovated soldier-settler's farmhouse features two guest suites (each with verandahs and views of the lake) and a third suite with a spa bath and a private entrance through the potager garden. Guests can read, listen to music or just sit by the fire in the spacious conservatory, where breakfast is also served. And what a breakfast it is, with a choice of dishes that use the property's own fruit and organic eggs. Location: 110km or 80 minutes east of Melbourne. Melway 912 V6. HEMA RA 52 D6.
