For those who don't remember the 1940s musical, Brigadoon was about a boy and a girl falling in love in an enchanting Scottish village that was difficult to leave. There's a good chance that could also happen at its Australian namesake which is nestled in 20 acres of magical gardens and bushland. And at 90 minutes from Melbourne, it's a lot closer than Scotland.
There's an enticing choice of accommodation options dotted between Brigadoon's established trees, flower beds and cosy nooks. Cardhu Cottage is popular for its spacious, open-plan layout or the larger Tullamore Cottage has two bedrooms and, being the original dwelling on the property, has period charm renovated to current levels of comfort. The loft and studio apartments are newer, and have even been upgraded recently with fresh new colours, fabrics and fittings, which along with log fires and spas make them cosy, romantic retreats.
Brigadoon is in the epicentre of the La Trobe Valley's gourmet region, which is famous for cheeses, wineries, boutique breweries, berry farms and much more. Location: 136km or 1.5 hours southeast of Melbourne. Melway 928 C7. HEMA RA 52 E7.
Facilities: Six suites (four with spa, wood fire). One two-bedroom cottage (wood fire). One contemporary apartment (laundry). All with kitchen facilities, queen or king beds, RC AC, TV, DVD, heating. Self-catering (breakfast provisions available).
