There is a wonderful thing about Daylesford: it prides itself on its rural seclusion and the bucolic delights of small-town hospitality, but it is entirely comfortable with avant-garde architectural accommodation such as Lake Daylesford Lodge. This property – with its seven individually styled, very contemporary villas – sits beside the township's famous lake, just 600 metres from the shops, cafes and curios. It is a refuge of warmly welcoming modernity.
There's a choice between two- or three bedroom villas to suit couples or groups of friends travelling together. Downstairs is a big lounge with sleekly fashionable furniture and an open plan kitchen with all the necessary gadgets. The Lake House's restaurant is just footsteps away or fire up the electric barbecue on the terrace.
 The bedrooms continue the decor theme with minimal frills, and depending on the villa, the ensuites have either a spa or a whimsical yet roomy stone bath in which to soak. Time away doesn't get much better than this.
