This large, beautiful house is like an oasis set in the middle of the Wombat State Forest but only seven kilometres from Daylesford. Barcaldine has 40 acres of grounds, featuring trimmed box hedges, ponds in the stunning English-style garden, an olive grove and at least 2500 vines, which supply its own cellars and tasting room.
Guests are warmly greeted and are welcome to relax in the living room, with its double-sided fireplace and views of the surrounding countryside, or to browse the library with its eclectic book collection and seductive Chesterfield couch. The three guest rooms are spacious and lovingly outfitted. Two have old style, claw-foot baths in which to soak away the day's exertions.
There is no real reason to leave the estate (although there is plenty to do nearby). You  can explore on foot or by mountain bike, try your luck fishing in the dam and host Rosemarie La Rosa does a fabulous Italian-inspired breakfast or a multi-course dinner by arrangement. The scale of Barcaldine might be grand but the reception is delightfully personal.
