These twin, two-storey mud brick cottages in two acres of mature gardens blend admirably into their secluded environment of native forest and ferns in the Dandenong Ranges. At night you can fall asleep to the croaking of frogs along Menzies Creek and awake to kookaburras having a laugh. And yet this is just a short drive from the pretty hill township of Emerald where Puffing Billy whistles his arrival on the restored narrow-gauge railway.
The cottages have a romantic country feel with their 80-year-old woolshed beams and stained-glass windows. The upstairs bedrooms have chandelier-lit vaulted ceilings and private balconies. The downstairs lounge is furnished in unpretentious provincial style, with leather chesterfields by the gas log fire. Bathrobes and candles are provided for the corner spa (just the spot after an invigorating walk on bush tracks along the creek), and there are port and chocolates for a cosy evening in.
All you need for a substantial breakfast is provided in the kitchen, and the shops and cafes of Emerald and other towns of these picturesque hills are not far away.
Location: 50km or 50 minutes east of Melbourne. Melway 125 F7. HEMA RA 48 K3.
Facilities: Two adjoining, two-storey cottages each with private entrance, kitchen, lounge (gas log fire, TV, DVD, CD), underfloor heating, spa bathroom, second-storey bedroom. Full breakfast provisions provided. Visit this property's website
