Handsome verandah-clad pubs are part of Victoria's heritage, and it is deeply gratifying to see one such as The Empyre restored to its former grandeur. Built in 1860, the Empyre is now a decadent combination of luxury boutique hotel, highly acclaimed restaurant and cafe (recommended by The Age Good Food Guide) and a fascinating mix of historic architecture and modern amenities.
Each of the six rooms has been lavishly outfitted with antique furniture, including some truly opulent carvings on bed heads, wardrobes and dressers. Ornate cornices, heritage colours and rich carpeting all add to the picture of 19th century elegance; the stunning bathrooms and LCD TVs are a modern kind of luxury. Best of all, two of the suites front onto the upstairs verandah, making a lovely place for a pre-dinner drink.
 The Carriageway restaurant is contemporary and lively, or for a really special group dinner book the Gwynedd dining room with its 14-seat table and formal Victorian ambience (right down to some of the hotel's original wallpaper). Dining, staying and relaxing at the Empyre is a truly indulgent experience.
