According to hosts Fred and Leslye Thies, Emeu Inn attracts two types of guests: those who come for one of the best restaurant experiences in the region but also find an inviting place to stay and those who are tempted by the luxury accommodation but return for the food and wine.
Either way, Emeu Inn has established a truly enviable reputation among Victoria's long list of gourmet getaways. It has recently celebrated its 150th year of operation, although the current incarnation is a long way ahead of the 1857 original. An umbrella-clad facade shields the restaurant and wine-and-food store (with an amazing selection of Heathcote wines). Secreted behind that are six suites and one self-contained cottage for guests staying the night or longer.
The suites feature period furnishings and open fires and five have double spas. The cottage sleeps four people, has its own kitchen and is perfect for a small family or two couples keen to check out the shiraz capital of Australia. Then there's The Age Good Food Guide recommended dining, which scales the heights from Fred's European heritage to bush tucker and back. Difficult to resist, really. Location: 110km or 1.5 hours north of Melbourne. Melway 909 H5. HEMA RA 45 B13.
Facilities: Six ensuite rooms (TV, DVD; five with spa); two guest lounges; courtyard. Licensed restaurant; continental breakfast, other meals à la carte. Wine tasting centre.
