Newstead, an old goldfields village on the Loddon River, has a butcher, a baker and a candlestick maker. Really – and each is well worth your custom. But the town's rustic 1860s red-brick chapel, with its typical gothic arched windows, has been born again as a self-contained cottage. The living and dining room is big enough for a small congregation, while the sleeping quarters (with their own bathrooms) can comfortably accommodate one family or two couples.
The owners also run the Lake Cairn Curran Vineyard (recently awarded 4.5 winery stars by James Halliday), where by arrangement guests and visitors may try and buy wines at the mud brick cellar door of the historic Park Hill homestead.
Back at the Chapel, breakfast provisions, dinners or food hampers can be ordered in
advance, but if you wish to use The Chapel's kitchen, try the renowned bullboar (spiced beef and pork) sausages – a Swiss-Italian speciality of this region – from the local butcher. Otherwise, check out the restaurants and cafes of nearby Daylesford, Hepburn Springs, Maldon and Castlemaine. Location: 135km or 1½ hours northwest of Melbourne. Melway 909 C7. HEMA RA 45 C11.
Facilities: One cottage: two king bedrooms (or one king singles), one ensuite, one spa bathroom, kitchen/dining/living (TV, DVD, CD, VCR), laundry facilities, courtyard (BBQ). Self catering (breakfast provisions and dinner available by arrangement).
