What could be better after a day of exploring Ballarat than to return to a charming art and antique-filled apartment that offers a superb blend of hosted B&B accommodation and the discreet privacy of your own rooms. This is the pleasure of Silver Birch, set in a tranquil garden and warmed by the welcome of your hosts Mary Anne and Richard Francis.
Since we last visited, a second bedroom (ideal for families) has been added to the apartment, which is part of a beautiful 1912 Edwardian home on Ballarat's Soldiers Hill. Couples will love the unflouncy period ambience, the private verandah, the claw-foot bath in the big ensuite and the furnishings that ineffably harmonise with the heritage of the main house. You can stow the goodies you have gathered from the region's many providores in the kitchenette and cook up a big breakfast there after a night in the snoozy beds.
 The rose and lavender-filled garden looks and smells divine, an ideal place to sit with some of the supplied quality chocolates and magazines. This is a very exclusive Ballarat experience, just a short walk from the city centre.
