Montrose is a labour of love, not just by owners Narelle and Michael, who have restored the historic cottage with painstaking attention to detail, but by the gold-digger who built it more than 150 years ago. This was the first bluestone residence in Ballarat and the only one still standing: now it is a lavishly luxurious retreat for couples.
The combination of period simplicity and modern extravagance is extraordinary. There are gleaming timber and solid flagstones floors, refined French provincial furniture, and the kitchen's cool, clean lines invite you to enjoy the espresso machine with 12 types of coffee provided. Soak in the claw-foot bath, snuggle up in front of the open fire, and keep returning after seeing the sights of Ballarat.
