Summer crowds on the beach looking seawards might not realise that up in the Otway Ranges behind Apollo Bay is a little slice of heaven in the form of Marriners Falls Cottages. Set on 172 acres of rainforest-filled gullies, tall timber on the hill tops and sheep-dotted green meadows, the property is magnificent, but then the cottages are also pretty special.
The main attractions here are privacy, gorgeous views, fresh air and country-style luxury. The choice of cottages depends on whether guests arrive as a couple or a small group, but in every case there's crisp country architecture with a fabulously elevated verandah from which to watch the sunset and the myriad bird life passing by or dropping in to visit.
 Inside, each cottage has a roomy lounge with French windows leading to the balcony, a log fire that's perfect to snuggle in front of during winter or cool evenings, and a fully equipped kitchen to get lunch or dinner happening. Owners Susan and Stefan live nearby but are happy to leave guests alone until needed for advice – including eating options at Apollo Bay just down the road.
