If your visit to the rugged west coast of Tasmania includes the desire not just to see the wilderness but be part of it, Wheelhouse Apartments is an excellent place to start. The two self-contained villas have been designed to give an uninterrupted panorama of historic Macquarie Harbour through incredible cantilevered windows that make the lounges seem suspended over the cliff edge. Any closer to the water, and you'd get your feet wet.
The designers have created spaces that allow guests to enjoy the magnificent scenery in style and comfort. Each of the spacious upstairs bedrooms has a spa overlooking the water, and downstairs you can indulge in some outdoor living on the deck that leads off the lounge area. The use of local timbers such as myrtle, Huon and celery-top pine give the interiors a glowing warmth and natural feel.
 If you can drag yourself away, Strahan has excellent cafes and restaurants and easy access to boating on the harbour. But gazing out to sea, ensconced in the warmth of one of these beautiful villas, makes staying in a seductive option.
Location: 300km or four hours west of Hobart; 3.5 hours southwest of Launceston via Cradle Mountain. HEMA RA 58 C3.
