Penghana is an imposing National Trust-listed mansion which towers over Queenstown and has striking views of the old copper-mining town and its mountain sentinels. This grand old building served as the mine manager's residence for 97 years until 1995. It has a beautiful entrance, Queen Anne blackwood staircase, decorative pressed tin ceilings and antique furniture. Historic photographs and memorabilia recall its former life, when the mine manager was by far the most important person in town.
These days, Penghana has been restored beautifully and is a must-visit on any Tasmanian gourmet tour – sumptuous evening meals are by arrangement served in the splendid dining room dominated by the original table, which is big enough to seat 16 diners. In spite of its impressive size, the building has cosily warm and welcoming living and bed rooms and there are even plans for an artist-in-residence program.
Penghana is a perfect base for exploring the rugged west coast. Don't miss an underground tour of the seven-kilometre main decline of the old mine, a spectacular ride on the restored rack-and-pinion railway from Queenstown to Strahan, and from there, a cruise on the harbour.
Location: 260km or four hours west of Hobart. HEMA RA 60 J4.
Facilities: Four in-house ensuite queen rooms (one suite); one suite (double and twin room, bathroom). Guest lounge, dining room, billiard room. Full breakfast served. Visit this property's website
