With the Derwent River drifting past, walls built by convicts 180 years ago, and the rich splendour of antique and modern furniture, you really know you've arrived in a special part of Tasmania. Woodbridge is part of the state's history, and the work of Laurelle and John Grimley in turning this lovely building into one of Tasmania's finest boutique hotels is extraordinary.
Although dripping in heritage (which has been preserved in features like brick arches in the rooms), there's a beautiful fusion of contemporary design in each of the nine guest rooms and suites, and the gorgeous living and reading room. Polished floorboards, exquisite furniture and bedding and muted neutral tones let the architecture speak for itself. All rooms have views across the terraced gardens down to the river, private jetty and riverboat.
 There are many local attractions and restaurants, but for a fabulous four-course dinner you can't go past Woodbridge's own dining room. A contemporary history lesson never tasted so good.
