Perched high above Peppermint Bay, this is a retreat with an intriguing difference that the owner-builders aptly call “naturally luxurious”. They have erected a pair of stunning bushland studios made of straw bales, blue gum timber and recycled corrugated iron, with rustic stone chimneys and many eco-friendly features. All very funky and, best of all, the six-metre high windows look out over Bruny Island – even from your queen-size bed up in the loft.
Furnishings are in keeping with the buildings: covered straw bales as bench seats, Tasmanian timber dining tables, efficient wood heaters and well-equipped kitchens (complete with espresso coffee machines). And each studio has a balcony with a view and barbecue.
Albe and Melissa lay on hearty breakfasts including freshly baked bread, eggs from their own chooks, smoky bacon and field mushrooms. For dinner, the acclaimed Peppermint Bay restaurant – a showcase for Tasmanian regional produce and wines – is just down the road. From Woodridge, both sides of the scenic Huon Valley and conjoined North and South Bruny Island cry out for at least two or three days' touring. Location: 40km or 40 minutes south of Hobart. HEMA RA 56 J4.
Facilities: Two self-contained retreats each with open-plan living/dining/kitchen, spa bathroom, double bedroom, upstairs loft master queen bedroom, entertainment deck (BBQ). Full breakfast provisions provided. Visit this property's website
