Craggily majestic Mount Roland dominates the picturesque landscape that forms the pastoral setting for this cluster of comfortably appointed log cabin-style guest cottages (ranging from spa suites and cottages to those suitable for families). Guests are welcome to fish for trout in the dams, go for a trail ride on one of the friendly ponies or relax in the heated indoor pool. At night, join in the spotlighting and possum-feeding walk.
Sniffing the fresh country air and gazing at the gorgeous scenery enticed us to explore the local district. It's a short walk to the 1870s silver mine from which the Retreat takes its name. Within easy reach are the Mole Creek limestone caves, and the Trowunna Wild Life Park where you can watch the Tasmanian devils being hand fed. Also worth visiting is the Tasmazia maze complex, lavender farm and pancake parlour.
Of course, a trip to the iconic Cradle Mountain National Park is a must. But remember, the longer you stay, the more you will discover on the property and in the area.
Location: 35km or 40 minutes south of Devonport; 90km or 1¼ hours west of Launceston. HEMA RA 60 F7.
Facilities: Three spa cottages; six standard cottages (all self-contained with one or two bedrooms, living/dining/kitchen, bathroom). Smaller disabled unit; lodge unit and spa suite also available. Heated indoor pool, trout-stocked dams, pony riding available. Self-catering. Visit this property's website
