Travellers heading to nearby Cradle Mountain may be forgiven for mistaking Glencoe for just another staggeringly cute, lavender-and-cream Tasmanian country house, tucked away behind rose bushes and looking serenely onto Mount Roland. New owners Ginette and Remi Bancal have made it so much more by assiduously renovating it into a French-style farmhouse, with impeccable use of colour and carefully chosen furnishings.
Remi is a first-class chef (he once cooked at The Ritz in Paris) and serves his rustic French cuisine in the guest dining room. After eating, you may need to relax in the delightful garden, which is a living Monet of flowers, established trees and a backdrop of farmland. Or retreat to the guest lounge with its intriguing art and glowing log fire on cooler days.
The guest rooms are furnished with French accents (Toile de Jouy patterned fabrics, cream-painted provincial tables, carved antique wardrobes) and nothing is more inviting than the deep beds and open fireplaces. Western Tasmania's rural and wilderness pleasures are all nearby, and Glencoe is waiting to look after you while you seek them out.
Location: 21km or 22 minutes south of Devonport. HEMA RA 60 E7.
Facilities: Four in-house ensuite queen rooms (TV), guest lounge (log fire), dining room. Tea Room. Dinner by prior arrangement (48 hours). Licensed. Continental breakfast served. Visit this property's website
