It seems almost unbelievable that a place as peaceful and scenic as the Coal River Valley could be so close to Hobart. Yet barely 20 minutes' drive from the city centre (and even less from the airport) you arrive at Riversdale's vast 300 acres of farmland, with four new cottages overlooking vineyards, olive groves and the Pittwater estuary.
Host Wendy Roberts has taken immense care not only to ensure the cottages are luxuriously and lovingly decorated in French-provincial style, but that guests have plenty to do – if you want, of course. You can walk the vineyard, visit the olive factory, check out the private beach or just chill out on your cottage's verandah or divine living room with some wine from the cellar.
 Books, DVDs, games and much more are provided, but then again, the claw-foot bath and deep beds also beckon. Attempt to spot the 68 bird varieties already recorded and watch for wallabies and echidnas while enjoying a hearty breakfast on the verandah. Picnic in the olive grove or visit nearby historic Richmond, but most of all enjoy a relaxing country escape.
