Built by convicts in 1829 and listed by the National Trust, this grand Georgian-style mansion was once the home of a Tasmanian premier. Still prominent on its enviably situated corner location, it now is one of the oldest buildings in Hobart to offer accommodation.
The impressive staircase, stately drawing room, antique furniture and works of art recall a more gracious era as Tasmania slowly developed from its penal origins. The old-world elegance of the bedrooms and suites is balanced by modern amenities, and for complete privacy for a romantic couple there is a separate cottage sharing the courtyard garden.
You may walk two blocks up Elizabeth Street to North Hobart's admirable restaurant and shopping precinct or a few blocks down the street to the central business district, which borders the fabulous waterfront.
