If Jane Austen had ever visited Tasmania she would not have been able to resist passing through the original dry-stone wall, wandering through the rose gardens and booking herself into one of Wagner's romantic stone cottages. Located just out of Swansea, the estate has five unique cottages each with a private garden; some dating back from the 1850s and all built from the golden-hued local stone.
The cottages are marked by comfortable leather lounges, roaring fireplaces and lots of country charm. But modern conveniences have been included as well; there are spa baths, large-screen televisions and DVD players. Farm-fresh eggs and home-baked bread are included in the breakfast hamper so you can whip up a country breakfast in the sunny kitchen at your leisure.
This is a great base for exploring the local beaches, nearby Freycinet Peninsula and historic sites. And no trip to Tassie would be complete without sampling some local produce; vineyards, olive groves and berry farms are all located nearby. A beautiful visit is guaranteed and dreams of Mr Darcy are an added bonus.
Location: 135km or 1½ hours northeast of Hobart and southeast of Launceston. HEMA RA 59 C13.
Facilities: Five self-contained studio, one- and two-bedroom cottages each with kitchen/ kitchenette, dining/living (open fire, plasma TV, CD, DVD), spa bathroom, laundry. Private garden. Hearty breakfast provisions provided. Visit this property's website
