Make your escape with our Sydney surrounds accommodation

The Blue Mountains form a deceptively low ridge on the western horizon of Sydney. But, up close, it is clear why it took European explorers 25 years after landing in 1788 to find their way through this jigsaw of sandstone escarpments. Only 15 years ago, a stand of about 100 Wollemi Pines – last seen in 200-million-year-old fossils – was discovered here in a forgotten valley.

The Mountains have a distinctive highland micro-climate that is very different from sub-tropical Sydney. The geography has spawned a string of charming little towns and villages along the winding route of the Great Western Highway. Faulconbridge is a great first stop. Here, Norman Lindsay (subject of the film Sirens) set up his studio, which is now a gallery with the charming Lindsay’s Cafe. The district also captured the heart of Australia’s father of Federation, Sir Henry Parkes, who bought 600 acres here in 1877. He is buried in the town’s cemetery.

Wentworth Falls is named after the eccentric William Charles Wentworth, one of the explorers who first found a route through the mountains in 1813 (you can visit his mansion in the Sydney suburb of Vaucluse). Wentworth Falls is a vibrant village with great places to eat, shop and stay. Make sure you walk the tracks to see Wentworth’s waterfalls and the magnificent Jamison Valley. The evolutionary theorist Charles Darwin toured the area in 1836 and you can still follow his route today.

Leura and Katoomba have been drawing visitors to the mountains for 130 years. Leura is a gorgeous village with a real shopping mall – not a faux shopping centre – that has antique shops, booksellers and places to eat. Also worth checking out are the Everglades gardens, built by Paul Sorensen in the 1930s. Katoomba has been at the heart of Blue Mountains tourism for more than a century. Nearby is the iconic Three Sisters rock formation, which could be the most photographed natural feature in NSW.

Last, but definitely not least, Blackheath has some of the most awe-inspiring vistas in the Blue Mountains, including the panorama from Govetts Leap in the wild Grose Valley. Blackheath is also an entry point to the Megalong Valley, which is a marvellous place for horse riding. The newly restored Six Foot Track was designed for riders heading to the subterranean world of the Jenolan Caves.
