This could be a setting from a painting by Tom Roberts, a chance to touch the very heart of a working farm set on the banks of the Murray River. This is sheep country for as far as the eye can see and Portee is at the forefront of the selective breeding that produces fine micron merino wool.
Ian Clark has spent years perfecting breeding techniques. A key part of a visit here is the chance to tour the 18,000-hectare farm with him and hear personally about this important work. There is wildlife to see, from kangaroos and wombats to the prolific birdlife. The guest accommodation is not what you might expect – the shearers have their quarters but yours is pure outback luxury style in the restored 1873 homestead. Ensuites, comfy beds and tasteful soft furnishings are complemented by a spacious guest lounge and dining room that overlook the station gardens.
In the evening, the station's superb cuisine might include prime roasts, fresh garden vegetables and a surprise dessert. Naturally, breakfast is hearty, setting you up for a day of exploration or perhaps just quiet contemplation by the billabong.
