It feels like time has been suspended at Poltalloch Station. At some point in the six generation history of this 5500-acre property, someone turned off the clock and preserved the early 1800s for us to enjoy today. You will come here for the infusion of history, the charm of the accommodation and the absolute waterfront position on beautiful Lake Alexandrina. But most of all, you will come for the peace and calm.
Hosts Beth and Chris Cowan have lovingly maintained the little village that once was a town in its own right. The original shearing shed, blacksmith, general store and carpenter's workshop are all preserved for guests to enjoy (Beth's tour is not to be missed). Accommodation is in three cottages, each sharing in the charm and history of the station. Country kitchens, fireplaces and cosy beds offer genuine warmth.
What to do? Canoe or row a boat on the lake, wander the wetlands (one of the most important bird habitats in the Coorong area) and visit Poltalloch's own lighthouse. Explore the wilderness of nearby Coorong National Park and learn the history of the station or simply curl up in front of your fire. Poltalloch is a wondrous, rewarding experience.
