Host Ted Nettelton and his family planted thousands of trees over many happy holidays, creating a 30-hectare bush sanctuary of great beauty. In winter, the wind wuthers through the trees (hence the name) and throughout the year kangaroos and other wildlife grace the property.
Of the three very private guest cottages, the grand yet rustic Bronte Manor caught our eye, sitting proudly on an elevated spot overlooking the rolling hills of Clare. Emily Brontė would feel completely at home: this mud-brick manor was hand built by Ted's family and resonates with the borrowed history of recycled timbers, antiques and a collection of curios.
Inside, the Great Room has an almost churchlike feel with windows looking out onto the landscape and a roaring log fire for comfort during chilly valley evenings. The hand-carved dining table promises many a joyous feast lasting well into the night. The idea is to bring great company (including four-legged friends, who are most welcome) and soak up the charm, serenity and fresh country air.
