As the name implies, Springbrook is all about a retreat to nature – a forested reserve with just two deliciously designed cabins and two cottages in the centre of an environmental surround sound system. What the pictures don't show are the gorgeous aromas and tropical scents. When you walk up the leafy path and into these peaceful cottages and cabins, you enter a fragrantly timbered habitat on multiple levels.
Dappled sunlight casts rippling highlights on the handsome wooden floors. The cosy lounges centre on comfy white sofas arranged around a wood-fired heater, just the thing to keep the highland night cool far away. Outside are big wide verandahs that act like elevated observatories for viewing the flittering spectacle of lyrebirds, possums, pademelons and myriad other species. And the verandahs make a great place to tuck into your breakfast provisions or the courtesy chocolates and sparking wine.
At the Retreat, you are in easy range of various walks, restaurants and galleries. But for most visitors here that proximity is beside the point – escape is on their minds. Location: 107km or 1¾ hours south of Brisbane. RA 7 J11.
Facilities: Two cabins and two cottages each with queen bed, bathroom with therapeutic spa, lounge (fireplace, TV, VCR, CD), kitchen, BBQ. Cottages also have loft with double bed. Laundry facilities. Continental breakfast provisions provided (first morning).
