There is just one place we recommend to visitors who want to explore the extraordinary landscape of the Bunya Mountains National Park: Taabinga Homestead. This is a rare combination, where the region's natural attractions are only rivalled by the quality of the National Heritage-listed accommodation.
At Taabinga you have access to the rainforests and grassy upland plateaus of the national park or to the property's acclaimed Spring Music Festival, which since 1983 has become a feature of Queensland's cultural landscape. But the homestead is the real prize. Built in 1846, Taabinga has been in the loving hands of host Libby Leu's family since 1887. Guests enjoy the privilege of wandering the stately grounds and choosing between a variety lodgings from the homestead to the character-laden charms of the Single Men's cottage, The Store or Jack's.
Hosts Libby and Colin are masters at preparing sumptuous country dinners, hearty breakfasts or lunch hampers. And you can leave your pet at Taabinga while heading off to explore the national park, the Kingaroy district or the local wineries. This is country Australia at its best.
Location: 235km or 3¼ hours north of Brisbane. RA 9 E10.
Facilities: Three cottages: each with two or three bedrooms (various bed configurations), lounge, fireplace, bathroom, kitchen, RC AC. Grand homestead sitting and dining rooms. All meals available by prior arrangement. Visit this property's website
