The owners of 1770 Reefhouse have created something quite special for visitors to this gem: a very private seaside escape at one of Queensland's most historically significant locations. Little has changed here since 1770, when Captain Cook made his first coastal landing (just 500 metres up the beach) after leaving Botany Bay. From the superb deck you can marvel at the view across Bustard Bay, perhaps seeing a humpback whale breach in season or the shimmering backs of passing dolphins.
Everything about this apartment is relaxed yet very well planned, with a full kitchen, entertainment lounge and big shady deck with water views. But we love just lying back at night on the queen bed and drinking in the music of the waves after a sunset walk to the headland. Bliss.
The real magic here is the setting, with your own private beach (on a marine national park) just a short stroll through the surrounding national park, which echoes to the calls of native birds. Grab the Reefhouse
kayak – or bring your own boat and trailer – and enjoy the coast that captured Cook's attention. Or head off for some snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef, reef surfing or fishing. Location: 135km or two hours north of Bundaberg or 125km or 1¾ hours south of Gladstone. RA 11 J12.
Facilities: One apartment: one bedroom (queen), lounge (TV, DVD, CD), bathroom, dining, kitchen, deck (BBQ), laundry. Kayak. Self-catering.
