The verandah came to colonial Australia with British army officers from India, and nowhere was it put to better use than in Queensland. Today, the Queenslander house is prized as a reminder of a gracious era and one such gem – the 1870s Zanzoo Retreat, standing in 14 acres of burgeoning garden with Freshwater Creek flowing past – has been sensitively converted into a luxury B&B.
Zanzoo has three upper bedrooms with ensuites and sitting areas with day beds. Three bedrooms downstairs have private patios and share two superb bathrooms. Guests can relax in the main upstairs lounge, which has a dining area, or a reading room downstairs. A generous tropical breakfast on the spacious balcony will make you feel like 19th-century gentry, but with amenities such as air-conditioning and a stylish kitchen for guests' use.
Zanzoo is easily reached from Cairns and the airport and departure points are nearby  for the Great Barrier Reef, Kuranda and the Daintree. Hosts Marc and Sharon live in a separate cottage, allowing privacy with discreet service.
