For couples or honeymooners wanting to live out their own deserted island fantasy, Coco Loco provides a romantic hidey-hole. This secluded tropical paradise overlooks Bingil Bay, the Coral Sea and Brookes Beach – once a favourite seaside escape of former Australian Prime Minister, Harold Holt. Coco Loco is enfolded by a rainforest where privileged guests have sometimes spotted the endangered cassowary.
There are two gloriously relaxed shacks at Coco Loco, one with a spacious living area, kitchen and bathroom; the other with a gorgeous king-size bedroom and ensuite – you get both all to yourself to revel in breezy interiors and exteriors painted in fresh, vibrant colours. Nearby is the two-bedroom Doctor's, a bright and breezy beach house that is ideal for families or couples travelling together.
This is a place to play: snorkel the Great Barrier Reef, swim or fish in isolated Bingil Bay, or explore your lush rainforest surrounds. Hosts, Steve and Mem, live next door and are self-confessed recluses, leaving guests to enjoy their own private getaway.
Location: 140km or 90 minutes south of Cairns, 5km or three minutes north of Mission Beach village. RA 14 K7.
Facilities: Coco Loco (pictured): comprises two shacks, one with queen bed (ensuite); the other with lounge, kitchen, bathroom, BBQ. The Doctor's: one queen bedroom (ensuite) and one with two singles, kitchen, lounge, terrace (BBQ). Self-catering. Visit this property's website
