A haven off the highwayParkes is a wonderful town that fully repays spending time to explore and immerse yourself in its country town delights. Better still, you get to stay at one of the most beautifully situated properties in country New South Wales – Welcome Cottage.
The cottage name is apt as you arrive at this quiet haven, leaving highway angst far behind. Its sophisticated style is very city-meets-country, making it the only 4.5-star self-contained stay in Parkes. The kitchen is a triumph, combining corrugated iron, clean-line bench tops and all the mod-cons. It has a AAA eco-tick rating and only natural cleaning products are used. Jill has stocked it with her scrumptious jams, liberal breakfast supplies and a yummy welcome basket. Hand-made soaps and fluffy towels make the spa bathroom a delight. The sunsets are simply awe-inspiring and extra friends can stay at the Saltbush Shed also on the property.
Yes, you know about The Dish at Parkes (the 3D tour to Mars is a must-see). But Parkes has other fabulous attractions: the annual Elvis Festival in January is a hoot (the King’s last Cadillac is at The King’s Castle), the Parkes Car Museum has an extraordinary collection and there is plenty to see in the region including the Western Plains Zoo.
