If you thought historic homes were damp, dull and ghostly, Watervilla House (c. 1850s) will change your mind forever. There is a spirit here borne of the host’s ebullient style – Jane Littlejohns is a vibrant person whose passion for this house, for the guests who descend to enjoy it and her family of bright young adults and friendly pets is truly infectious.Jane’s approach is simple – her family welcome guests like they are a part of the scenery. Pull up a chair and chat, wander the gardens, share in the stories of travels and hear about the history of the house. There’s no need to speak in hushed tones – you can feel free to admire the art, antiques and mementos without feeling nosy or you can find a quiet spot in the garden or on the shady verandah and meditate.
Watervilla is rather like a comfy slipper – stylish yet unpretentious, cosy yet classy, happy and charming. The guest rooms are private and well appointed; the drawing room and dining rooms are grand and Jane’s silver service breakfasts are relaxed and indulgent. And we defy you not to fall in love with Chester and Luke (the odd couple of pooches), the one sheep and the couple of cats. Watervilla is brilliant.
