Winelovers’ slow food escapeAt Tizzana Winery your feet are on the ground of Australian winemaking history. It was established in 1887 by one of the most remarkable pioneers of the Australian wine industry: Dr Thomas Fiaschi. After studying medicine in Pisa and Florence, Italy, Fiaschi migrated to Australia in the 1870s and worked as a GP, military surgeon, medical pioneer and winemaker. The provincial Italianate ambience of this wonderful estate is not a faux design – it’s the real thing.
The winery’s setting, glorious views and superb food make it one of our favourite regional hideaways and highly recommend it for wedding nights, anniversaries and special double-couple getaways. The Provincial Room is a glorious exposition of timber, woodwork and crisp white linen; the Rose Room has big French doors that open onto a courtyard rose garden. Both are generously appointed with fluffy towels, toiletries and plump pillows, and guests have their own sun-filled lounge. For the ultimate indulgence, opt for the five-course dinner with the estates’ own wines – this is slow food and artisan wines at its most heartfelt.
Tizzana is a beguiling slice of Tuscany in Australia, just a stone’s throw from historic Windsor and only a short drive from Sydney.
