When hosts David Hay and Michael Speers sold their historic Thorn Park Country House in the Clare Valley previous guests were crestfallen. They intended to travel Europe and not look back – but thankfully they did. Their new incarnation nearby has all their hallmark touches wrapped in a bold new architect-designed guise.Their dinner parties are back, too, with a relaxed formality in keeping with the Australian vernacular style of the building. There are just two spacious guest rooms (each with its own ensuite). Some favourite antiques and artworks were retained, gorgeously counterpointing the new Thorn Park's very contemporary feel.
The location is idyllic. Thorn Park By The Vines is surrounded by vineyards and tall gum trees and overlooks a small lake. Pursuits are gentle and restorative: indulge in a cooking class in the purpose-designed gourmet kitchen, take a book and wander to a quiet spot by the lake, or put your feet up in the lounge or fireside in the library. And at the end of the day relax on the balcony with a glass of wine as the sun sets over the vines – the perfect prelude to a wonderful dinner with friends.
