The Russell is one of our favourite Sydney CBD places to park the bags and explore the harbour city. It's a gorgeous heritage hotel - there are only 30 rooms - that has just undergone a complete makeover and there is even a new lift for modern convenience. We loved it before and we love it more now with the pearl stripe feature walls, muted fabrics and high-ceilinged rooms. The Russell Wine Bar downstairs has also been refurbed with a luscious peacocky theme.
A very cosy small-hotel vibe fills the whole place, infusing it with the charming atmosphere of a big B&B that has plenty of attentive hosts at your beck and call. The rooms range from those with ensuites to very affordable standard rooms that have a shared (but private) bathroom. Upstairs there is a roof garden with 270-degree views of the whole Rocks-Circular Quay-Opera House panorama. It's a great place to lap up the sun and retreat from the hustle of central Sydney.
The Rocks needs no introduction to those who love Sydney. It's all there from early 18th Century pubs (the 1801 Fortune of War is next door) to museums, restaurants and wonderful walks around the foreshore.
