Golden stones, warm hearthsWe have seen many gorgeous historic homes but The Old Stone House at Bungendore easily earns a position in our Top 10 list. Its stonework glows with a 140-year-old patina and the congenial rooms have seen many nights of revelry and quiet rest. It makes a perfect travellers’ stepping stone to the tourist attractions of Canberra or the coastal pleasures of Batemans Bay.
Age has not wearied this marvellous gem. Its comforts are modern yet entirely sympathetic with the period. There are four delightful guest rooms, three with ensuites and one with its own private bathroom* (complete with a claw-foot tub, chequered floor and MOR products). Guests can enjoy several gorgeous rooms: play snooker in the billiards room, take tea in the sunny conservatory, relax by the fire in one of the lounges or put on a DVD in the home theatre. The property is equipped with conference facilities, making it an ideal retreat for executive team strategising. Bridal parties love the brilliantly photogenic garden, which includes a cherry arbour and Japanese garden.
There are places to eat in town including divine French food at Le Tres Bon, which also offers cooking classes, and for breakfast, host Debbie offers a sumptuous three-course feast.
