Eat, drink, play, sleepAustralia’s great pubs are the vastly underrated grande dames of the boutique accommodation industry. With their high-ceilings and lovely facades, they make for a uniquely interesting stay. These features have been carefully restored at Newcastle’s The Albion, and better still, it has turned itself into a funky gastronome’s pub with an excellent bill of comedians, celebrity speakers and degustation lunches by local wine makers. All you have to do afterwards is roll upstairs and snuggle into your crisp, white linen sheets.
The Albion has been a mainstay of Newcastle since it was built in 1922. Its redux beyond its original glory is brilliant. You get a choice of twin single or queen rooms plus there is a self-contained apartment. We love the sparely refined treatment of the rooms, with plain walls, gorgeous lamps, tall windows, beds with comfy doonas and L’Occitane soaps. The shared bathroom facilities are well presented and do the trick or choose the apartment for your own bathroom. There is a private residents’ lounge upstairs with sea views.
Across the road is the Newcastle Marina and foreshore for walks and cycling. The hotel can arrange boating and fishing trips. Newcastle’s CBD is a two-minute drive.
